Husqvarna 128LDX Gas Pole Saw Review

The Husqvarna 128LDX is a gas gardening tool with a detachable pole saw (model PA1100). It accepts a number of different attachments including a string trimmer, cultivator, and hedge trimmer. Read on for the full review.

Husqvarna 128LDX Gas Pole Saw

Power

The 128LDX uses a 28cc engine rated at 1.1 horsepower. While not quite as powerful as the more professional-grade Huqvarna 327P5x and 327PT5S, the 128LDX still has plenty of cutting power and a 10” bar length. Sawing through smaller branches is pretty effortless. Larger branches in the 8” range can be lopped off with a single cut, but the engine may bog down a bit. Cuts are still made fairly quickly, even in larger branches, and the speed is better than electric models.

Ease of Use

Operation is easy thanks to a well written instruction manual. You’ll need to mix fuel with 2-cycle engine oil, prime the bulb, then let the saw warm up for a few minutes after you start it. This saw is slightly lighter than the average gas pole saw at 13.9 pounds, but is still a bit tiring without a harness for long jobs.

This saw includes an automatic oiler which works quite well at keeping the chain and bar lubricated. All you need to do is make sure the reservoir stays filled. Expect to get a couple hours of use before refilling the oil tank.

Maintenance and Reliability

Husqvarna makes the most reliable gas engines available in a pole saw, in my opinion. The 128LDX starts up easily each time. To keep it running properly, you’ll want to follow the maintenance schedule which includes checking the air filter and spark plug from time to time. Again, the manual explains this well so it’s pretty easy to do.

Maximum Extension

The reach of this saw is average at about 9’ 4” fully extended, which doesn’t match that of the Husqvarna professional grade pole saws. The shorter length does keep the total weight down a bit, and you’ll still be able to reach branches about 14 feet off the ground.

Package Contents

In the box you’ll get the gas trimmer and the detachable pole saw, along with a manual. You’ll need to purchase 2-cycle engine oil, gas, and a bottle of chain and bar oil to get started.

Price

The 128LDX is priced very reasonably for a gas pole saw. If you’re cross-shopping with a Troy-Bilt gas trimmer, you’ll find the Husqvarna runs about $100 cheaper.

Warranty

Husqvarna includes a 2-years parts and labor warranty as with all of their pole saws.

Replacement Parts

You can find replacement parts through eReplacementParts.com if you service this saw on your own. If you’d rather have a service center near you perform parts replacement or maintenance, you can use the Husqvarna Dealer Locator.

Pros

  • Easy to use and reliable
  • System accepts other lawn maintenance power tool attachments
  • Low Price

Cons

  • Not quite as powerful as Husqvarna professional models
  • A bit heavy, so it can be tiring on longer jobs

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a reliable yet cheap gas pole saw, I think the Husqvarna 128LDX is a great choice. You can also eliminate the need to upkeep several power tools by purchasing other attachments compatible with the 128LDX, such as the string and hedge trimmers.

Husqvarna 327PT5S Gas Pole Saw Review

The Husqvarna 327PT5S is the longest reaching pole saw on the market, along with being the most powerful. Read on for our full review.

Husqvarna 327PT5S Gas Pole Saw

Power

The 327PT5S uses a 2-stroke, 24.cc gas engine with 1.2 horsepower. This makes it one of the highest-output pole saws on the market. The use of a 2-stroke engine rather than 4-stroke means a higher max RPM, thus a quicker chain speed and faster cutting ability. This saw not only has a lot of torque and a long 12” bar to cut through thick tree limbs, but will cut as fast as any other saw out there.

Ease of Use

I find Husqvarna saws the easiest to operate of any gas saw. The instructions are detailed and clear. The automatic chain oiler works effectively. The air purge system works great and allows this saw to start up easily every time, which isn’t something that can be said for all gas saws.

Unlike other Husqvarna saws, this model has a telescopic pole which makes it very versatile.

The weight isn’t bad for a gas saw at 16.1 pounds, especially considering the extra-long reach of this saw. However, if you’d rather give up about 1.5’ of reach for 2 pounds less weight, you can consider the 327P5x instead.

Maintenance and Reliability

If you run a landscaping business or have a large amount of trees to prune on a frequent basis, you can’t go wrong with Husqvarna saws. I consider them to be the most reliable brand. To maintain this saw, you’ll want to regularly check over the chain for damage and file any burrs. Be sure to keep the automatic oiler filled and oiling will be a no-brainer. You should also check the spark plug and clean up the air filter about every week if it’s used daily. The instructions cover the maintenance procedures well, and they’re pretty easy to complete on your own. It’s also not a bad idea to take it in to a shop every year or two to make sure the engine is running optimally.

Maximum Extension

There’s simply no other saw with as long of a reach as this one. When comparing the Husqvarna 327PT5S vs. the 327P5x, this has an even longer reach at just over 13 feet compared to 11 1/2 feet on the 327P5x. The extra reach can really come in handy and depending on the tree, might allow you to make most of your cuts without using a ladder. Once it’s in your arms, you can expect to get to branches around 17-18’ off the ground.

Package Contents

Husqvarna includes a great adjustable harness with their higher end pole saws. This really helps counteract the weight of the saw and make it easier to work with on long jobs. A nice user manual is included in the box, and it’s definitely worth reading through. It’s easy to follow and will clear up any questions you have on the features and maintenance schedule of this pole saw.

Be sure to pick up a bottle of 2-cycle oil to mix with your gas and some bar and chain oil before you get started.

Price

There has to be one downside to the most powerful and longest-reaching pole saw, right? Well, that’s its price. It’s one of the more expensive gas saws out there. I think it’s worth it, though, if you’re willing to maintain the saw properly rather than just but a new lower-quality saw every couple of years. Husqvarna’s engines are very dependable and this saw lasts for a long time.

Warranty

The 327PT5S has a 2 year parts and labor warranty. This is pretty standard for any pole saw.

Replacement Parts

Replacement parts are available through eReplacementParts.com if you’re planning to do a replacement or repair on your own, while the chain is available from a number of retailers. Otherwise, you can use the Husqvarna Dealer Locator to find a service center in your area.

Pros

– Outstanding cutting power
– Reliable and easy to start engine
– Longest maximum extension of any saw

Cons

– One of the more expensive pole saws

Conclusion

If you’ll be using your pole saw nearly every day, I wouldn’t bother with cheaper saws in the $350 or less price range – they just don’t hold up as well as a professional grade saw such as this. If you can budget it, the Husqvarna 327PT5S has the best performance and reach of any pole saw and makes an excellent choice. If you rely on a saw for your landscaping business or have a large number of trees on your property to maintain, I think this is the best choice on the market today.

Husqvarna 327P5x Gas Pole Saw Review

The Husqvarna 327P5x is one of the most powerful  and longest-reaching gas pole saws on the market. Continue on for our complete review.

Husqvarna 327P5x Gas Pole Saw

Power

With a 24.5cc, 1.21 horsepower 2-cycle engine and big 12″ bar, this is a powerful saw with a lot of torque. This model uses the E-TECH II engine which is quieter and more clean-running than most gas engines but doesn’t give up any power. If you’re looking for the saw with the most cutting power, Husqvarna gas saws are the way to go. You can expect to cut through tree limbs up to about 18” in diameter!

Ease of Use

At 14.1 pounds, the 327P5x is surprisingly light for its power and reach. Most of the weight is in the base of the saw, so by keeping it near your center of mass it’s pretty easy to balance and use for an extended period of time.

Included in the box is a harness, which other manufacturers may offer but typically charge extra for. The harness can be a little complicated to adjust and get used to, but it makes a world of difference in terms of reducing fatigue and making the saw safer to use.

The P327P5x also has vibration dampening, which does make the saw less tiring to run over long periods of time.

Maintenance and Reliability

As with any gas pole saw, the maintenance required is more than with an electric model. The E-TECH II does run cleaner, so less grime builds up around the engine. This can be a problem with older saws which get covered in grime and cause sawdust to cling everywhere.

In addition to normal maintenance of taking care of the chain and automatic oiler, you’ll also need to check the spark plug and clean the air filter every week or so. The included manual does a great job of explaining the maintenance intervals and procedures.

Maximum Extension

Though the maximum extension of this saw is a bit shorter than Husqvarna’s top-end (and most expensive) 327PT5S model at 12’, this model extends to 11 feet 6 inches. This is still far longer than most pole saws, and will get you to about 15’ of reach.

Package Contents

As mentioned earlier, the package includes an adjustable harness which is a must-have if working for more than a short while. The user manual is one of the best in the business and makes getting started and maintaining the saw pretty easy. All you need is your gas/oil mixture (87+ octane fuel plus two-stroke engine oil) and saw chain oil.

Price

Of course, the best equipment isn’t cheap. This saw can usually be found for under $570, which is a big chunk of money. But for how powerful the saw is, how much further it reaches than other saws, and how reliable it is for daily use, I think you get what you pay for in this case.

Warranty

All Husqvarna saws come with a 2 year warranty which covers both parts and labor.

Replacement Parts

If you choose to service the saw yourself, most replacement parts are available through eReplacementParts.com. The chain is available through Amazon. If you’d rather have a local service center perform repairs and maintenance, check out the Husqvarna Dealer Locator to find a nearby dealer.

Pros

– Excellent cutting power
– Trusted Husqvarna reliability
– Long maximum extension

Cons

– Non-telescopic pole
– Expensive

Conclusion

Overall, I think the 327P5x is a great gas pole saw value. It’s not cheap, but it’ll last for many years of daily use as long as you maintain it. It also has better cutting power and a longer reach than most gas saws on the market. If you can afford to pay a little extra, the 327PT5S would be an overall better choice mainly due to its telescopic pole. In terms of raw performance, the 327P5x is still excellent.
